As a manager, you are in a position to increase the motivation of your employees. This basic training in managerial skills in motivation will allow you to become a more effective manager for yourself and for your company. You will learn how to handle motivation problems, which will help you gain 100% effectiveness from your employees.

What should you expect from this article?

As you know, motivation is a complex issue. Many psychologists and researchers spend their entire lives researching people’s motivation to perform. Similarly, there are many books in bookstores these days that promise to give us the secret to “getting others to do what we want.”

There are many theories about motivation; and different techniques for solving motivational problems. Rather than attempting to review all of these theories, the purpose of this module is to look at six common motivational factors that will make the difference between motivated employees and employees with motivational problems. We will use only the “theory” necessary to gain a basic understanding of each motivational topic. First, we will discuss what you can do to solve the motivational problem.

Learning objectives

Upon completion, you will be able to:

o Recognize which types of employee behavior problems are motivational issues and which are not.

o State in plain language what the real motivating factor is behind the different types of problems encountered as a manager and what you can do to correct each problem.

Apply the appropriate steps or responses to solve the motivation problem.

o Motivate average and above-average artists to perform even better.

Training format

This article is designed to do more than just give you information on motivation. Rather, it is designed to teach you skills that you can apply in your daily jobs.

This will be accomplished through the use of exercises that require your participation. Active participation will allow you to learn “what to do and how to do it”, better than sitting passively and being an observer. Please keep this in mind as we proceed.

The manager’s methods motivate

Many management experts agree that the key to employee morale and Motivation is the quality of supervision they receive from their supervisor. It is for this reason that most companies invest a lot of time, energy, and money in selecting their managers, followed by in-depth training. In fact, this information is designed to help you, the manager, develop methods that have been “proven” to produce the greatest possible motivation in your employees.

Who is responsible for motivation

Managers share the responsibility for motivating their employees with the individual employees themselves. The manager is 100% responsible for establishing a motivating climate in which the employee works. The employee is 100% responsible for taking advantage of the motivating climate to perform at their best.

Detect motivation problems:

Focus on behavior

Motivation is not something we can see directly. That is the main reason why it is so complex. Instead, we look at a situation and notice that some actions, tasks, or behaviors that should have occurred have not occurred. We often call it a “motivation problem.”

As a detective, we must be aware of clues that hint at a “motivation problem” in an employee. These clues are behaviors.

Focusing on behaviors has several benefits:

The behaviors are observable; they only require our attention, not a complicated psychological analysis.

The behaviors are objective; they are not easy to misinterpret.

The behaviors are measurable; we can count how many times a certain behavior occurs.
